Report: Seminar on “The Principle of Judicial Independence”
On 24 March, the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk hosted a seminar entitled “The Principle of Judicial Independence”, organized as part of the international project of the Polish-German Foundation for Science entitled “Judicial Independence in Polish and German Legal Doctrine”. The project is being carried out by the University of Gdańsk in cooperation with the European University Viadrina under the leadership of Professor Adam Wiśniewski. The seminar was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk, Professor Wojciech Zalewski.
The seminar provided an opportunity to summarize the results of the grant and to exchange reflections on contemporary challenges related to the principle of judicial independence and the functioning of the judiciary in Poland and Germany.
Presentations were delivered by Professor Adam Wiśniewski and Dr Paweł Kwiatkowski from the Department of Public International Law, Professor Markus Beham and Professor Stefan Haack from the European University Viadrina, as well as Tymon Brzuzy, a law student at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk. The event was organized by the Department of Public International Law together with students involved in the Academic Society of Law and Diplomacy and the Academic Society of International Law.
The seminar was accompanied by a visit from a delegation of the European University Viadrina. As part of the visit, the Faculty hosted Professor Markus Beham and Professor Stefan Haack. The programme also included a Moot Court Workshop conducted by Professor Markus Beham. Another important highlight of the visit was the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk and the Faculty of Law of the European University Viadrina, marking an important step in the further development of academic and teaching relations between the two institutions.
